There once was a period of about five years right after I started going to graduate school when I didn't go to the dentist. I knew it was the wrong thing to do, but money was tight... and nothing was hurting. Eventually something did start to hurt, and I made an emergency visit to the dentist. I was in pain because I was grinding my teeth, not because of abcess or infection. I quickly dealt with that, but it got me started on regular dentist visits... and the expensive repair of four cavities soon followed.
Mrs. Geek is going through something of the same thing this week with her car. She has a relatively late model automobile that she got used from a rental car agency a few years back. Aside from some corrective repair immediately following an accident on 27 December 2002 and some much needed brake work, Mrs. Geek couldn't afford any other preventitive maintenance.
Until now, that is. The car has nearly 70k miles on the odometer and we thought it was time for it to have a proper check up. So Mrs. Geek took it to a garage I used to deal with before I bought my current car. They looked it over, and called back with a jaw-dropping estimate of $850!
