the hidden links between mysteries

I made an interesting discovery this morning. My little sojourn into the attic of the Geek abode this weekend may well have solved a few other small mysteries that have been with us for the last few months.

All of them concern water. Our water bill has been a little high. Whenever I've left boxes of stuff ready for donation to Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul, the boxes have gotten soaked. The plants along the fence in the back yard are looking a little withered -- though it has been a rather dry summer.

Having the power off for a couple hours this weekend meant that the timer that runs our irrigation system was running slow. Slow enough, in fact, that the sprinklers started running after Mrs. Geek and I got up this morning. It was for this reason that I heard what sounded like a garden hose running full blast alongside the house. When I bothered to take a look, I saw that the crimp on the end of the hose that supplies water to one of the "circuits" of our sprinkler system had come undone... splashing a lot of water all over the walk next to our house (where I was keeping those boxes.)

Of course, I made another discovery this morning: the McCain/Palin ticket got a big bounce in the polls from the convention last week. Teranika opines that Canada will be no safe refuge for liberal-minded Americans like me. So, I'm dreading the idea of another four years of Republican rule. I begin to get the sense that this something like what it must have been like in the decades before the Civil War -- politics seems to divide us so drastically right now. Because I am a moderate Democrat, some hardcore Republicans must think me "unclean" and not worthy of their time or hospitality.

To cap it all off, I read the following quote from Carolyn Bauer, an 89 year old woman in Philadelphia who was visited by Joe Biden over the weekend:

"I told him I'm not going to vote for him," Bauer said. "Anybody who runs with a guy with a name like that is not going to get my vote. It'd be disgusting to get a man named Barack Obama as president of the United States. No way. I mean it ... I'm going to vote for McCain and the lady."

"[Obama's] a Muslim," Bauer added. "He pretends to be a Christian, and he isn't, he's a Muslim."

I got a call on the answering machine from the local Democratic party asking for volunteers (a first, honestly -- they've asked for my money, but never my time.) Perhaps it's time to fight the good fight and lend them some of my time.
