I know, I know... there hasn't been much news appearing here for the last week or so. Lots of big changes have been afoot. I've been so caught up in the middle of them that I haven't had much time to collect my thoughts and write them down here.
First of all, it looks like Girlfriend S. will be moving in with me next week. We had originally hoped to put off living together until after we were married because we don't believe in "living together" for its own sake. Fate has taken a hand, however. The roof blew off the house where she was staying last November. Since then she's been staying in temporary housing paid for by homeowner's insurance. Repairs are approaching completion, but, the owner of the house wants to take this opportunity to sell the place and doesn't want Girlfriend S. to move back in. To complicate matters, Girlfriend S. also has some credit card debt she racked up during grad school that she wants to retire before we get married. So, faced with the prospect of finding a place to live for only a year and paying the exorbitant metropolitan rents nearby, she would much rather move in with me now. Consequently, I've spent a fair amount of time recently helping her to move her valuables and belongings to my place.
In other wedding related news, a major step occured last night: Girlfriend S.'s father told us how much he is willing to invest in this event. We have been looking at possible reception sites for the last three weeks or so. Prices are high enough to drive one batty if one looks at all the zeros long enough and the perspective guest list is proving to be rather large because Girlfriend S.'s family is huge. The number that Girlfriend S.'s Dad mentioned is not exactly the one we hoped for, but it is quite respectable indeed (just saying this makes me feel like I'm in a Jane Austen novel.) We are elated because we now know that some semblance of the affair we are discussing will actually occur. We may have to cut a corner or two here and there, but, we will have a wedding. So far, we have a Church, a Monsignor, a wedding dress, several bridesmaids and groomsmen, and as of this morning... a reception site. Not bad for an event still about 360 days out.
And oh yes.... there will be no choices of entree at the reception. To paraphrase Marie Antoinette: "Let them eat chicken (or the vegitarian option)."
